Boost User Adoption through DIY Usability Testing

By October 11, 2014 No Comments

Today I had the honor of leading a workshop at the annual SharePoint Saturday Cincinnati event. It was a wonderful event and I am grateful to have been a part of it.

My workshop did not only showcase the business value of doing in-house usability testing but also taught the basics of setting a usability test setup and recommended the tools and resources needed to make DIY usability testing accessible to everyone.

The most important key-takeaways from this presentation are:

  • Test as early as possible: The easiest problems to fix are the ones you haven’t created yet! Usability testing can start as early as drawing on the back of a napkin.
  • Test everything: existing products, wireframes, prototypes, etc.
  • Watch, don’t assume! Ask question, but don’t guide.
For more information on how to run your own usability tests, check out Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems by Steve Krug. Props to Steve for writing this book and sharing his wisdom. He has played an influential role in our team’s growth and obviously the workshop I gave today. Thanks
